Provincials

The start of the new ball hockey season is fast approaching and the OWBHL is getting ready for another exciting season of ball hockey.  As a follow up to the message we sent out late in the winter, the OWBHL would like to let everyone know of the upcoming tryouts for the Provincial teams and the Can Am Teams.  Tryout information is as follows:

Coaches:
Peewee — Nick DiFederico
Bantam — Richard Selkirk
Midget — Brett Bush

Tryout Schedule:
We will be holding a short tryout schedule this year.  If you are unable to participate in some of the tryout sessions please speak to the coaches at the appropriate age group as soon as possible.  All tryouts at all of the levels will be held at Barbara Ann Scott Arena (2250 Torquay Ave, Ottawa ON K2C 1J3).  Furthermore, if there is sufficient interest at any of the levels the OWBHL will send multiple teams to the Provincial Tournaments.

Peewee Tryouts (born in 2005/2006):

  • April 28 @ 1pm (1 hour)
  • May 5 @ 1pm (1 hour)
  • May 12 @ 1pm (1.5 hours)

Bantam Tryouts (born in 2003/2004):

  • April 28 @ 2pm (1 hour)
  • May 5 @ 2pm (1 hour)
  • May 12 @ 2:30pm (1.5 hours)

Midget Tryouts (born in 2001/2002):

  • April 28 @ 3pm (1 hour)
  • May 5 @ 3pm (1 hour)

All players must be registered in the league and wear their team jersey for the tryouts.  Any player who is not registered at the time of the tryout session will not be allowed on the slab to participate.

Equipment for Tryouts:
Players must wear full ball hockey equipment during the tryouts.  If they are missing equipment, including a proper CSA approved helmet and cage, they will be asked to leave the playing surface until they are wearing the proper equipment.

Goalies will need to bring their equipment for the tryouts including a proper CSA approved helmet and cage, they will be asked to leave the playing surface until they are wearing the proper equipment.

Please bring water bottles to the tryouts so your player can keep hydrated.

Practice Schedule:
Practice schedules for the Peewee and Bantam teams have been sent to the coaches who will communicate these schedules to the players who make the respective teams.  They will be scheduled for Sunday afternoons from 1-4pmat Barbara Ann Scott Arena.  For the Midget players, as we did last year the Midget team will be playing games against teams from the men’s league to prepare for the tournaments.

Team Fees:
Team fees will cover the slab time for the tryouts, practices and player jersey and shorts.  The team fees will be approximately $100-$120 for the players participating in the Provincial Tournaments.  This does not cover the travel expenses associated with the tournaments.

Provincial Tournament Dates:

  • Peewee (2005/2006) — Kingston, Ontario — July 12-14, 2019
  • Bantam (2003/2004) — Brampton, Ontario — July 5-7, 2019
  • Junior (Midget — 2001/2002) — Brampton, Ontario — July 5-7, 2019

Can Am Tournament:

Over and above the Provincial Tournaments, the OWBHL has been invited to send two teams (U15 and U20) to the Can Am Tournament which is scheduled to be held in Brampton, Ontario on July 25-28, 2019.  Furthermore, there will be U17 aged players invited to join teams at their age group based on their performance at the Provincials.  As I have mentioned previously, this tournament is used  as a scouting tournament for the Junior Team Canada teams that will participate at the World Ball Hockey Championships in 2020.  The World Ball Hockey Federation has already announced that in 2020 the junior championships will be held in Rovaniemi, Finland (about a 1 hour flight north of Helsinki).  The OWBHL had one player on the U18 team at the 2018 Championship in Slovakia and I am hopeful that the OWBHL will have representation on every team at the 2020 World Championships.

There will be additional information for the players who are invited to join these teams as they do not align perfectly with the Provincial Tournament age groups.  However, due to these different age groups even if you do not make a Provincial Team you may be invited to participate at the Can Am Tournament if you are interested.

While your league coaches will be reminding you of the tryouts closer to April 28th, please mark the times down so you do not miss these sessions.
